Timber has played an important role in structures for thousands of years and continues to do so. Loss of structural strength in timber caused by insect attack can weaken masonry or roofs supported by timber. In cases of fungal decay timber sources such as lintels and joists can become 'reservoirs' of fungal decay which in the case of dry rot can spread to other dry parts of the building in search of fresh timber.

The company is researching nano technology particle fluids as a means of preventing and eradicating fungal decay and wood boring insects. Monitoring systems are being devised to flag up decay before it causes more serious damage.
