Wet rot is more common than dry rot and causes serious damage. It thrives in wet conditions, but as it can only spread on wet wood it is easier to eradicate than dry rot which will spread regardless of the conditions, damp or dry.
- Establish the extent of the attack, in particular if structural timbers have been affected.
- Carry out a full survey of the property.
- Locate and eliminate sources of moisture.
- Promote rapid drying of the structure.
- Cut out all the structural timbers which are unsound and replace.
- All existing and replaced timbers to be treated with fungicidal fluid.
Latin Name: Coniophora puteana.
Common Name: The cellar fungus.
Habitat: Softwood and hardwoods.
General: A brown rot which is the most common cause of decay in woodwork that has become soaked by water leakage. Wood darkens with cracks along and across the grain but usually less deep than those caused by Serpula Lacrymans.
